Olivia Wilde was born in New York March 10, 1984. Her mother Leslie Cockburn (née Redlich) is a journalist and producer of 60 Minutes, his father Andrew Cockburn, born in London and raised in Ireland, as her uncles Alexander Cockburn and Patrick Cockburn is also a journalist. Olivia has an older sister, Chloe Cockburn, a lawyer specializing in civil law in New York, his aunt, Sarah Caudwell, was author, and his paternal grandfather, Claud Cockburn, a journalist and short story writer.

She grew up in the city of Washington. A graduate of Phillips Academy of Andover, and holds a Master of Arts , she studied acting, directing and producing more than twenty school productions. She then traveled abroad, including Ireland, where she studied at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. Then she moved to Los Angeles and, while working in a casting agency, landed a small role in the feature film The Girl Next Door with Elisha Cuthbert. In 2003, she married the Italian Prince Tao Ruspoli, but they split Feb. 8, 2011.

Close to the Democratic Party, she supports Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential election and participated in the campaign of the mid-term elections in 2010 by appearing in a campaign video disparaging the Republican Party. She is tipped to play Lara Croft in a reboot of the series.

After a first pass in the American series Skin, Olivia then turned in Newport Beach for 13 episodes. She also filmed three movies that came out in 2005 in the United States: Alpha Dog with Emile Hirsch and Justin Timberlake, Shmeckler Bickford's Cool Ideas with Patrick Fugit and Conversation with a woman with Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart.

In addition to his work, Olivia is also a team member of the Los Angeles Filmmaker's Cooperative. She is the editor of LAFCO NEWS and is a member of the Presidency Department of Education.

Between 2007 and 2011, she played the role of Remy Hadley, aka "Number 13" in the series House MD. She left the series in 2011, after a final appearance in episode 3 of season 8, to pursue his film career. 

In 2011, she also plays important roles in the film Tron: Legacy (Disney) and Cowboys and Invaders. She appeared in the video Stolen by Dashboard Confessional and in the video It's A New Day of will.i.am for Obama's victory, but also in Derezzed group Daft Punk, on the soundtrack of Tron: The legacy.
